Ultrasonics in Dental Hygiene Most patients are accustomed to the hand scalers and curettes for "scraping" the plaque and tarter off their teeth. These instruments have been around forever and have been quite effective for buildup removal, but unfortunately they have not done much to destroy the real cause of periodontal disease, the bacteria. The new ultrasonic devices we use remove the plaque and tarter more quickly, easily, and with less patient pain. More importantly, these devices kill tarter and plaque-protected bacteria by sound waves. We often add antibacterial solutions to the ultrasonics that give further insurance the bacteria will be eradicated.
